Fantastic show. I have suffered terribly from allergy triggered eczema for for the last 5 years or so. (allergic to steel, leather and concrete) I have seen doctors and specialists all over the world - with little result (costs well in excess of $30k to end up with a bunch of high level steroid creams which i can only use for a week at a time before my hands litterally fall apart). Can you please link to more information on the suplements you mentioned in the show. I am in Australia - hoping it is also available here.

The show about curing diabetes/heart problems has been done already purely by changing diet. It has been filmed and put in a documentary called "Chow Down," you can see it for free on hulu. On the concepts of using diet/light use of supplements to push the body in the right direction naturally I could not agree more with the doc's viewpoint. However the idea of using supplements to cure severe problems can in some cases be quite a gamble.

My question is the same as many other doctors when it comes to using these supplement. Where is the scientific method PROVING the use of these supplements and pathways will cure a problem? Anyone can say that the science looks like it should work, but where are the clinical trials?

Taking a supplement without clinical trial evidence to support the theory is just a check raise in the dark.

Ryan, clinical trials are a very important part of testing something's effectiveness so that patients have evidence of it's effectiveness--absolutely agree with you that.

When it comes to severe problems people generally don't seek supplements unless the standard treatment option isn't helping them enough. If the standard option works then they have no reason to look elsewhere. If it doesn't work well then the next logical step is to seek other types of practitioners who based on their education and experience may point to a supplement that can be used safely with or without the standard treatment.

Unfortunately clinical trials haven't been done on many things that have been used for centuries to assist with certain problems. If there is no clinical trial for it does it mean it isn't effective? If their standard treatment option doesn't work should they do nothing until a new clinical trial comes out?

Of course one has to be cautious of who they seek advice from and that supplements have limitations and are often NOT the best option. People have to be careful, ask a lot of questions and monitor the effectiveness of either supplements or drugs as they take them. Without clinical trials it is more of a gamble. Sometimes unfortunately with clinical trials it is still a gamble when for example you don't know the long-term effects of a drug.

The important part is for people to learn about all their options and pick wisely.
